The 2004 Award Winners:The GLOBE Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the third annual GLOBE Awards for Environmental Excellence.
THE CORPORATE COMPETITIVENESS AWARD | top Whether through expansion, acquisition, or a change in strategic focus, corporations are seeking ways to meet global environmental challenges while maintaining and enhancing shareholder value. This award is presented to a corporation with a proven record of environmental stewardship that has materially contributed to economic competitiveness through a commitment to environmental excellence. Winner: Toyota In Canada Toyota has been doing business in Canada for almost 40 years. The company employs more than 5,000 people directly, while more than 8,000 people work at independent dealerships. The company's operations are national in scope, and encompass a wide range of activities through all stages of Toyota's products' life cycles. Products include Toyota and Lexus cars and trucks, and Toyota Industrial Equipment lift trucks. Toyota has embraced a vision for Canada combining a commitment to produce vehicles that minimize their impact on the environment with a desire to make positive contributions to Canadian society. THE INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION AWARD FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE | top Supported by the Government of Canada Environmental leadership often transcends the individual company to embrace an entire sector or industry. This award is presented to an association representing and industry sector that has shown leadership by going beyond regulatory compliance to develop a collective commitment to improved environmental performance through research, development and education in partnership with governments, non-governmental organizations, communities and other stakeholders. Winner: Canadian Urban Transit Association
The Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) has a mission and goals that are built around the notion of environmental sustainability inherent to public transportation. The Association has pursued this quest with the promotion of innovation through the display and showcasing of industry improvements; emphasis on environmental performance; development of partnerships with government and other stakeholders and development and pursuit of international industry partnerships; and the promotion of government policy that supports sustainable urban transportation. These efforts culminated in 2003 with CUTA becoming a signatory to a global Charter on Sustainable Development. Finalists:
THE CORPORATE AWARD FOR TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION AND/OR APPLICATION | top Supported by the Government of Canada Increasingly today, new and innovative technologies are being developed and applied to solve pressing environmental problems. This award is presented to a company that has demonstrated outstanding technical ingenuity in the development and/or application of an innovative technology or process with a significant environmental application. Winner: Xantrex Technology Inc. Xantrex Technology Inc. develops, manufactures and markets advanced power electronic and control products for the distributed, mobile and programmable power markets. The company's products convert raw electrical power from any central, distributed, or backup power source into high-quality power for use in businesses or homes. For the renewable energy sector, Xantrex designs and manufactures advanced power electronics that convert power from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, and advanced energy and storage technologies such as fuel cells, into electrical power. Privately owned with 500 employees and revenues of $105 million US in 2002, Xantrex is headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia. Finalists:
THE INDUSTRY AWARD FOR EXPORT PERFORMANCE | top Sponsored by The global demand for environmental technologies and services continues to expand and Canadian companies have demonstrated that they can succeed in this very competitive sector. This award is presented to an environmental technology or service company that has demonstrated the drive, talent and innovative spirit to have successfully carved out a place in the global environmental marketplace. THE CAPITAL MARKETS AWARD FOR SUSTAINABLE INVESTMENT & BANKING | top The Capital Markets Award for Sustainable Investment & Banking is a new addition to the GLOBE Awards for Environmental Excellence. The Capital Markets Award represents an explicit recognition that financial markets are increasingly integrating environment factors into investment and banking decisions, and are placing more capital into sustainable technologies and ventures. Canadian fund managers, bank, brokers, venture capital companies and investment advisors are developing new financial instruments, analytical tools and targeted funds that merit consideration for the Capital Markets Award for Sustainable Investment & Banking. THE AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN BROWNFIELD REDEVELOPMENT | top Many local governments and private sector companies are realizing the economic development opportunities that brownfields present and have made great strides in returning these idle properties to productive use.
