THE CORPORATE COMPETITIVENESS AWARD | top

THE INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION AWARD FOR ENVIRONMENTAL
PERFORMANCE | top
Environmental leadership often transcends the individual company
to embrace an entire sector or industry. This award is presented to
an association representing and industry sector that has shown
leadership by going beyond regulatory compliance to develop a
collective commitment to improved environmental performance through
research, development and education in partnership with
governments, non-governmental organizations, communities and other
stakeholders.
Winner: The Mining Association
of Canada

The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) is the
national organization of the Canadian mining industry. It comprises
companies engaged in mineral exploration, mining, smelting,
refining and semifabrication. Member companies account for the
majority of Canada's output of metals and major industrial
materials. MAC's mission is to promote, through the collective
action of members, the growth and development of Canada's mining
and mineral-processing industry, for the benefit of all Canadians.
The Association's broad functions are to promote the interests of
the industry nationally and internationally, to work with
governments on policies affecting minerals and to promote
cooperation between member firms and other organizations to solve
common problems. In 2004, MAC launched the performance-based
Towards Sustainable Mining initiative. Its aim is to enhance the
industry's reputation by improving its environmental, social and
economic performance.

THE CORPORATE AWARD FOR TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION AND
APPLICATION | top
Increasingly today, new and innovative technologies are being
developed and applied to solve pressing environmental problems.
This award is presented to a company that has demonstrated
outstanding technical ingenuity in the development and/or
application of an innovative technology or process with a
significant environmental application.
Winner: RailPower
Technologies Corporation
RailPower's antecedent history
goes back to the late 1980's when Franck Donnelly invented a
mainline turbine locomotive technology. The "project" became a
handful of people in the mid-1990's but expanded rapidly when
Vancouver Island resident, Jim Maier became President and CEO in
April 2003. Jim rapidly recruited a seasoned team of former senior
railroad executives, many of whom he had worked with at GE. Not
only has the technology been successful under his leadership with
major US and Canadian field trials, the company also attracted
major investments, including Blue Ribbon financial institutions.
Today, the company has its shares listed on the senior board of the
TSE with the symbol "P". It also has over CA$50 million cash on
hand.

THE CAPITAL MARKETS AWARD FOR SUSTAINABLE INVESTMENT
& BANKING | top
The Capital Markets Award for Sustainable Investment &
Banking is a new addition to the GLOBE Awards for Environmental
Excellence. The Capital Markets Award represents an explicit
recognition that financial markets are increasingly integrating
environment factors into investment and banking decisions, and are
placing more capital into sustainable technologies and ventures.
Canadian fund managers, bank, brokers, venture capital companies
and investment advisors are developing new financial instruments,
analytical tools and targeted funds that merit consideration for
the Capital Markets Award for Sustainable Investment &
Banking.
Winner: CleanTech Venture
Network

The Cleantech Venture Network LLC is an
organization that connects venture, corporate and institutional
investors with "clean technology" entrepreneurs, through related
information products, online services and the Cleantech Venture
Forum series of events. Our mission is to accelerate what we
believe is the next and necessary wave of venture innovation. We
serve over 600 affiliate investor member firms worldwide. We have
tracked more than $3.5 billion invested in cleantech ventures since
2002, of which Forum-presenting companies have raised nearly $300
million.

THE AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN BROWNFIELD
REDEVELOPMENT | top
Many local governments and private sector companies are
realizing the economic development opportunities that brownfields
present and have made great strides in returning these idle
properties to productive use. This award is presented to a local
government or private sector company or consortium, which has
demonstrated outstanding leadership in transforming a brownfield
site into a thriving, revitalized community or business area.
Winner: Canadian Pacific Railway
Company, Redevelopment of the Former Angus Shops in
Montreal
