THE CORPORATE COMPETITIVENESS AWARD | top
Presented to a corporation with a proven record of environmental
stewardship that has materially contributed to economic
competitiveness through a commitment to environmental
excellence.
Winner: Enbridge Gas
Distribution

As one of Canada's leading energy delivery companies,
Enbridge has used ingenuity, innovation to
integrate environmental principles into its three core operations:
crude oil and liquids pipelines, natural gas pipelines and natural
gas distribution. The company's energy delivery systems transport
products that provide fuel for transportation, heat for homes and
the energy resources for manufacturing.
While active internationally, most of Enbridge's assets are in
Canada and the United States. From Head Office leadership in
Calgary, Alberta, Enbridge operates the world's longest crude oil
and liquids pipeline and owns Canada's largest Natural Gas
Distribution Company based in Ontario.
Enbridge's environmental strategy springs from a foundation of
legislative compliance to a broad spectrum of social, economic and
environmental responsibility. Noteworthy is the company's
commitment to working with local communities in areas such as
energy efficiency. Enbridge's partnership ethic with customers,
shareholders, governments and the public - on a range of
environmental issues - is a clear reflection of its core value of
sustainability.

THE INDUSTRY GROUP AWARD FOR ENVIRONMENTAL
PERFORMANCE | top
Presented to an industry association that has shown leadership
by going beyond regulatory compliance to develop a collective
commitment to improved environmental performance through research,
development and education in partnership with governments,
non-governmental organizations, communities and other
stakeholders.
Winner: The
Aluminum Association of Canada

The Aluminium Association of Canada (AAC) is a
non-profit organization that links together the Canadian aluminium
industry, and its customers and partners to provide important
economic and environment benefits for our country.
AAC has embraced sustainable development, and made major efforts
on key environmental issues, such as reducing greenhouses gases to
combat climate change. This has helped Canada's aluminium industry
establish a collaborative relationship with key stakeholders such
as the Canadian public, the federal and provincial governments, and
local communities to act on environment and business issues.
For example, in January 2002, the Aluminum Association of Canada
signed a framework agreement with the Quebec government on
voluntary greenhouse gas emission reductions.
Canada's aluminum industry has also 'exported' its approach to
sustainable development to the metals markets of the world.
Finalists:
- Canadian Steel Producers' Association
- The Aluminum Association of Canada
- The Mining Association of Canada
THE INDUSTRY AWARD FOR TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION AND
APPLICATION | top
Presented to a company that demonstrated outstanding technical
ingenuity in the development and application of an innovative
technology or process with a significant environmental
application.
Winner: ALTECH Technology Systems

ALTECH is one leading Toronto engineering firm
that has sought to weave together new technological innovations
with its strong service base.
Altech's R&D program has recently generated an exciting new
treatment system for air pollution control which is effective at
removing particulates from 1 to 100 parts for million at very high
efficiencies. The proprietary technology is a sophisticated
scrubber system.
Called the Altech REITHERâ„¢, the technology is directed at
removing particulates from air emissions streams. Medical
researchers have concluded that particulate of less of 2 microns in
diameter are cancer-causing agents which has led many jurisdictions
in North America and Europe to ban such emissions.
The REITHERâ„¢ technology appears to provide a solution to many
industrial applications. Altech has made installations in the food
industry, chemical, zinc and plastics industries in North
America.
Finalists:
