The GLOBE Awards are judged by a panel of experts well known in the Canadian business community. The panel assesses the finalists' overall submissions, and selects the most outstanding entry to receive the award in each category. Selections are made in accordance with the rules and judging criteria stated on this website.

The judging panel for the 2010 GLOBE Awards is comprised of:

Toby Heaps

Toby Heaps is the president, editor and co-founder of Corporate Knights, an independent Canadian-based social enterprise focused on prompting and reinforcing sustainable development in Canada and abroad. Launched in 2002, Corporate Knights magazine is the world's largest circulation magazine dedicated to the subject of responsible business. It is distributed quarterly as an insert to 100,000 subscribers of The Globe and Mail. In 2008, Toby served as Press Secretary to Ralph Nader. In 2005, Toby spearheaded the first global ranking of the world's 100 most sustainable corporations, which is now an annual staple of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The Global 100 has been published by Newsweek, BusinessWeek and Forbes. Toby has a Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University in Economics, with a minor in International Development. From 1997-98, he spent one year in the Belgrade Field Program (LLB in Management Studies) with the London School of Economics and Political Science. Toby has been published in the Globe and Mail, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Toronto Star and makes regular appearances on the CBC.

Dr. Robert (Bob) Page is the TransAlta Professor of Environmental Management and Sustainability in the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy's Energy and Environmental Systems Group at the University of Calgary. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Haskayne School of Business and in the Faculty of Environmental Design at the U of C. Calgary. Dr. Page was recently appointed, in an open competition, as Chair of the Government of Canada's National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy. He was also recently appointed as Chair of the management committee for the International Standards Organization 14000 series of international environmental standards, which develops standards for adoption by industry and government (Geneva). From 1997 to 2007, Dr. Page was the Vice-President Sustainable Development at TransAlta Corporation. Prior to joining TransAlta in 1997, he spent 25 years in consulting, academic teaching, and research, including as Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Design at the U of C. Bob is a member of the Board of Directors for ENMAX Corp. and for the Banff-Calgary chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society. He is past Chair of the Board of the International Emissions Trading Association (Geneva) and a former member of the Business Environment Leadership Council of the Pew Center on Global Climate Change. Nicholas Sonntag is President of Westport Asia and Executive Vice President Corporate Development, Westport Innovations Inc. Working out of Westport's Beijing office Mr. Sonntag is responsible for Westport's operations throughout Asia and its corporate development program globally. Mr. Sonntag has been active in the international engineering and sustainability community for over 35 years. Between 2002 and 2005, Mr. Sonntag served as President of CH2M HILL's operations in China/HK (Beijing) and from 2000 to 2002 was President of CH2M HILL Canada (Toronto). Prior to CH2M HILL he served for 4 years as the Executive Director of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1991-92 Mr. Sonntag was the Chief of Staff to the Secretary General of the U.N. Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). And prior to the 1992 Earth Summit, Mr. Sonntag was the Director of Communications and Partnerships at the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD).

Wayne Soper's professional career spans four decades in environmental engineering, teaching, marketing and business development, corporate relations, sustainable development and media communications. Prior to his retirement, he had a long career with Vancouver based Westcoast Energy Inc. where he held a range of senior management and corporate executive positions, latterly as senior vice president, external relations.
Mr. Soper has continued his business based focus and media communications interests in sustainable development as founder and president of Smart Living Media Inc. He is actively engaged with the William Vince Foundation and is a director of Intersections Media, which teaches digital film making skills to at-risk youth. He is a director and past chair of the International Centre for Sustainable Cities.
Mr. Soper is a graduate of the University of British Columbia and is a registered professional engineer in the province of British Columbia.
